Married to the US Solicitor General Theodore Olson, a close aide and friend of President George W Bush, she was a prominent member of Washington's conservative elite; this group, which also included the Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas and the independent counsel Kenneth Starr, prompted Hillary Clinton to complain of a "vast right-wing conspiracy." There's more questions than answers. A few present themselves... Fisrt, I'm not sure about the phone situation in the lavatory, but why is she hiding in there if the terrorists want people to call their loved ones? Barbara wouldn't need to worry about charges if it were a cell phone, but reports indicate she didn't have her cell with her or her credit cards. Other reports say she did make at least one of the calls from her or another passenger's cell phone. Maybe she grabbed an aircraft-seat-phone and dodged off into the lavatory? How could Barbara have made a collect call from a credit card only activated phone system? I could be wrong, but I don't think one can get a signal from those phones without first activating the handset with a credit card. Which phone was used in the lavatory? I'm sure there are records and transcripts to look into this. We're thinking the passengers were already on the ground at a secure location by this time.

Below is an excerpt from a CNN story detailing an interview between Larry King and Theodore Olson regarding Barbara's phone call.

Olson was one of the passengers on American Airlines Flight 77, which was hijacked by terrorists and crashed into the Pentagon on September 11. But before she died inside the doomed airplane, Olson kept her cool and made two telephone calls to her husband. "She wasn't crying, she didn't even sound frightened. She told me her plane was hijacked and that they didn't know she was making a phone call," Ted Olson told CNN's Larry King. Barbara Olson's last words to her husband, he said, were "What do I tell the pilot to do?" (cnn)

Below is excerpted from a detailed timeline developed at cooperativeresearch.org; this section details the communications.

(9:25 a.m.) A passenger on Flight 77, Barbara Olson, calls her husband, Theodore (Ted) Olson, who is Solicitor General at the Justice Department. Ted Olson is in his Justice Department office watching WTC news on television when his wife calls. A few days later, he says, "She told me that she had been herded to the back of the plane. She mentioned that they had used knives and box cutters to hijack the plane. She mentioned that the pilot had announced that the plane had been hijacked." [CNN, 9/14/01 (C)] He tells her that two planes have hit the WTC. [Telegraph, 3/5/02] She feels nobody is taking charge. [CNN, 9/12/01] He doesn't know if she was near the pilots, but at one point she asks, "What shall I tell the pilot? What can I tell the pilot to do?" [CNN, 9/14/01 (C)] Then she gets cut off without warning. [Newsweek, 9/29/01] Ted Olson' recollection of the call's timing is extremely vague, saying it "must have been 9:15 or 9:30. Someone would have to reconstruct the time for me." [CNN, 9/14/01 (C)] Other accounts place it around 9:25. [About 9:25, Miami Herald, 9/14/01, about 9:25, New York Times, 9/15/01 (C), "by 9:25," Washington Post, 9/21/01] The call is said to have lasted about a minute. [Washington Post, 9/12/01 (B)] By some accounts, his warning of that planes have hit the WTC comes later in a second phone call (see (After 9:30 a.m.)). [Washington Post, 9/21/01] In one account, Barbara Olson calls from inside a bathroom. [Evening Standard, 9/12/01] In another account, she is near a pilot, and in yet another she is near two pilots. [Boston Globe, 11/23/01] Ted Olson's account of how the call is made is also strange and conflicting. Three days after 9/11, he says, "I found out later that she was having, for some reason, to call collect and was having trouble getting through. You know how it is to get through to a government institution when you're calling collect." He says he doesn't know what kind of phone she used, but he has "assumed that it must have been on the airplane phone, and that she somehow didn't have access to her credit cards. Otherwise, she would have used her cell phone and called me." [Fox News, 9/14/01] But in another interview on the same day, he says that she used a cell phone and that she may have gotten cut off "because the signals from cell phones coming from airplanes don't work that well." [CNN, 9/14/01 (C)] Six months later, he claims she called collect "using the phone in the passengers' seats." [Telegraph, 3/5/02] But it isn't possible to call on seatback phones without a credit card, which would render making a collect call moot. Many other details are conflicting, and Olson faults his memory and says that he "tends to mix the two [calls] up because of the emotion of the events." [CNN, 9/14/01 (C)] The couple liked to joke that they were at the heart of what Hillary Clinton famously called a "vast, right-wing conspiracy." Ted Olson was a controversial choice as Solicitor General, since he argued on behalf of Bush before the Supreme Court in the 2000 presidential election controversy before being chosen. Barbara Olson was known for her extremely partisan attacks on President Clinton. For instance, a few weeks before 9/11 she had called Clinton's mother a "barfly" who let herself be used by men. [Telegraph, 3/5/02] Some have questioned if Ted Olson can be trusted in his account of the call, since he has stated that lying to the public is justifiable. [Sydney Morning Herald, 3/20/02] Between his memory and his approval of lying for partisan ends, can Ted Olson's account be trusted? This is the only call from Flight 77, and the only call to mention box cutters. (cooperative research)

Duping the Operators

There doesn't seem to be any question regarding the flight paths of the planes tracked to their targets in New York or the fallen craft in Pennsylvania. The data breaks down for American Airlines Flight 77 though. If the transponder, radio and radar contact were all lost somewhere between West Virginia and Ohio (some reports claim the plane crossed into Ohio, while others do not) then how can we make positive identification of American Airlines Flight 77 in Washington D.C. airspace?

Flight of the Bumble Planes

Go visit a bumblebee hive some time, and try to keep your eye on just one bee. You can't do it. You get confused. Think of the 9-11 jets as bumblebees. Matter of fact, you could even call Operation 911 Flight of the Bumble Planes. I've worked in cryptology and there are many ways of hiding the truth. Substitute information, omit information, scramble the information out of sequence, and add nonsense (random garbage). All four methods were used on the 9-11 incident. Let me lay out the clues and show you where they lead... What did the radar show of the planes' flight paths? We'll never see the real records, for sure. But in the spy movies, when the spy wants to lose a tail, he gets a double to lead the tail one way while the spy goes the other. If I were designing Operation 911, I'd do that: As each of the original jets is flying, another jet is sent to fly just above or below it, at the same latitude and longitude. The blips of the two planes merge on the radar scopes. Alternately, a plane is sent to cross the flight path of the original plane. Again, the blips merge, just like the little bees you're watching outside the hive. The original planes proceed to the military airfield and air traffic control is thoroughly confused, watching the wrong blips ... Flight of the Bumble Planes, an article by 'Snake Plissken' and Carol A. Valentine [for what it's worth, I've seen large, white, unmarked jetliners tailing eachother very closely, nose to tail formation. It was almost surreal to observe.]

Found: The 911 "Stand Down Order"?

Jim Hoffman has discovered a document which I believe may be very important to the 911 skeptic movement. This document superseded earlier DOD procedures for dealing with hijacked aircraft, and it requires that Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld is personally responsible for issuing intercept orders. Commanders in the field are stripped of all authority to act. This amazing order came from S.A. Fry (Vice Admiral, US Navy and Director, Joint Staff) so it appears to me that responsibility for the US armed forces "Failure to Respond" rests directly with Fry for issuing this instruction, as well as with Donald Rumsfeld for failing to execute his responsibility to issue orders in a timely fashion.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Instruction CJCSI 3610.01A (dated 1 June 2001) was issued for the purpose of providing "guidance to the Deputy Director for Operations (DDO), National Military Command Center (NMCC), and operational commanders in the event of an aircraft piracy (hijacking) or request for destruction of derelict airborne objects." This new instruction superseded CJCSI 3610.01 of 31 July 1997.

This CJCSI states that "In the event of a hijacking, the NMCC will be notified by the most expeditious means by the FAA. The NMCC will, with the exception of immediate responses as authorized by reference d, forward requests for DOD assistance to the Secretary of Defense for approval."

Reference D refers to Department of Defense Directive 3025.15 (Feb. 18, 1997) which allows for commanders in the field to provide assistance to save lives in an emergency situation -- BUT any requests involving "potentially lethal support" (including "combat and tactical vehicles, vessels or aircraft; or ammunition") must still be approved by the Secretary of Defense. So again, the ability to respond to a hijacking in any meaningful fashion, is stripped from the commanders in the field.

While none of this relieves the Bush Administration from ultimate responsibility from 911, nevertheless there is the possibility that this discovery could somewhat diffuse the power of our movement's message about the "Stand Down", since it is now clear that it was implemented through a routine administrative memo.

If this comes up as an issue at the Washington 911 cover-up commission, it would be interesting if Fry could testify as to the reasoning behind making it bureaucratically impossible for the DOD to respond to hijackings in a timely fashion.

Having Trouble Accounting for Flight 77?

On an interview on Gretta Van Susteren: it took American Airlines 48hrs to confirm their plane hit the Pentagon. A lot can happen in 48hrs. For half the day on S11, Mr. Push, Gretta's guest, was led to believe that his wife perished in the WTC event, after which he learned it was Flight 77 his wife was on hitting the Pentagon.

Not according to the NYTimes. At 8:50 contact was lost.

NYTimes Flight 77 Transcript indicates radar and radio loss between last transmission at 8:50:51 and radio request at 8:56:32, they maintained a coast-track of the last known vector about 9:06, "and his last clearance as far as you know is on course to falmouth and then jay one thirty four right well we're just gonna treat him like non radar and we've already told the next sector they're gonna have to sterilize for him until we find out."

According to a "LIFE" special report, at 9:24 "The FAA notifies NORAD that a third jet, American Airlines Flight 77, bound from Washington to Los Angeles, has been hijacked. NORAD launches two F-16 fighters from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia to intercept the airliner." At 9:41 an aircraft impacts the Pentagon . . . "The fighter planes from Langley were still 12 minutes, or 105 miles, away when the Pentagon was hit."

According to the tower dialogues reported by CBS, "9:30 a.m. EDT, radar tracked the plane as it closed to within 30 miles of Washington."

9:36 National Airport instructs a military C130 (Golfer06) that had just departed Andrews Air Force base to intercept and identify it. Golfer06 reports it is a B767, moving low and very fast (http://professor2222.tripod.com/Flight-93/Fl93.Pentagon.htm).

The CBS tower dialoges indicate: "But the jet, flying at more than 400 mph, was too fast and too high when it neared the Pentagon at 9:35. The hijacker-pilots were then forced to execute a difficult high-speed descending turn. Radar shows Flight 77 did a downward spiral, turning almost a complete circle and dropping the last 7,000 feet in two-and-a-half minutes."

This is about the time the C-130 acquired it.

We have found a well articulated witness testimony to confirm the other aircraft and the C-130

We constantly scanned skyward with our "eyeball radar," noting the sound of every jet engine seemed to make us jump. Fortunately, the only aircraft noise was the crisp distinctive ripping sound was of Air Force F-16's or the roar and popping of the rotor blades of a Park Police UH-1 helicopter surveying the damage. The only large fixed wing aircraft to appear was a gray C-130, which appeared to be a Navy electronic warfare aircraft, he seemed to survey the area and depart in on a westerly heading. (Eye-witness testimony).

We have approximately 80 minutes of flight time, assuming a contiguous situation, for Flight 77. It departs at 8:21 and impacts 80 minutes, or 1 hour 20 minutes, later at 9:41. According to radio transcripts from NYTimes, we see that contact was lost approximately 30-some minutes into its flight. Most reports tend to show that as the midpoint in the flight path. If we assume the plane turned around and came back to attack Washington, it would seem to arrive near 20 minutes late. Since contact was lost and that can only be done after the craft is already under hostile control; we cannot say there was a 20 minute struggle for control of the aircraft. We are equally unable to explain the 20 minute lapse as the time it takes to turn the aircraft around. It is also difficult to account the time as loiter time over Washington DC as the hijackers discussed targets of opportunity (radar indicates it was tracked inbound at 9:30). Even if we subtract 3 minutes for the time discrepancy between the 9:41 impact reported by "LIFE" and the 9:38 impact suggested by the CBS tower report, we are still at a significant time-loss.
